There is a peculiar humiliation in being interviewed by a machine that cannot understand one’s doctorate.
The experience is neither dramatic nor dystopian. It is banal. The questions arrive in fluent prose yet fail to cohere. They refer to subjects never studied, omit those that were central, and conflate disciplines with the serene confidence of a system that has ingested everything yet comprehended nothing. The human candidate, meanwhile, is invited to explain his or herself to a statistical apparatus that cannot grasp the meaning of explanation.
And yet this is not a story of machine stupidity. It is a story of machine ascendancy.
The rise of large language models — systems such as ChatGPT and Gemini — has already transformed a swathe of what might be called mundane quasi-intellectual labour. Drafting memoranda, summarising reports, composing routine correspondence, producing technical boilerplate — these tasks, once the preserve of junior lawyers, civil servants and consultants, are increasingly automated. The language model does not understand in the human sense, but it performs convincingly. For much of the bureaucratic superstructure of modern life, convincing performance is enough.
As these systems improve, they will not merely assist; they will replace. They will conduct preliminary interviews, screen applicants, write first drafts of legislation, produce research briefings, answer client queries and perhaps even render provisional judicial opinions. The middle layers of cognitive employment — those that involve the rearrangement rather than the generation of knowledge — are especially vulnerable.
What, then, becomes of the human mind?
The conventional answer is that new employment will arise, as it always has. But there is reason to suspect that the distribution of intellectual labour will alter more radically than during previous technological revolutions. The industrial age displaced muscle. The algorithmic age displaces memory and pattern recognition. The present age threatens to displace structured expression itself.
Yet paradoxically, as the mass of humanity becomes increasingly redundant in routine intellectual work, a new elite may emerge — not the traditional aristocracy of wealth nor even the conventional meritocracy of credentialed professionals, but a hyper-intellectual clerisy whose principal function is to educate the machines.
Large language models do not train themselves in any meaningful normative sense. They ingest data, yes; but they require curation, reinforcement, correction, redirection. They must be told when they are wrong. They must be shown what coherence looks like. They must be guided away from hallucination and towards structured reasoning. In short, they must be disciplined.
The discipline can only be supplied by those who possess a depth of education that exceeds the machine’s mimicry.
To correct an error in Roman law, one must understand Roman law. To refine a model’s grasp of quantum mechanics, one must grasp quantum mechanics. To instruct it in moral philosophy, one must have wrestled with Aristotle, Kant and Rawls. The machine’s fluency conceals a hollowness that only genuine scholarship can detect.
Thus emerges the prospect of a bifurcated intellectual society. On one side, the vast majority who consume AI-generated knowledge, assisted and subtly directed by systems that anticipate their needs. On the other, a comparatively small class of individuals whose role is not to produce routine knowledge but to supervise, refine and extend the capacities of the models themselves.
These hyper-intellectuals will not necessarily be famous. They may not even be wealthy in the vulgar sense, although prosperity is likely to follow scarcity. Their power will lie in epistemic authority — in the ability to determine what the machine learns and how it reasons.
In earlier centuries, clerics mediated between the divine and the laity. In the age of AI, the new clerisy may mediate between the statistical and the human. They will feed lines to the models — not in the crude sense of scripting answers, but in the deeper sense of shaping conceptual architecture. They will decide which corpora are privileged, which moral frameworks are embedded, which historical interpretations are weighted as canonical.
This role demands not merely technical literacy but civilisational depth. It requires individuals who can see beyond the surface plausibility of generated text and identify structural incoherence. It requires those who have read widely enough to detect subtle misattributions, who have reasoned rigorously enough to expose fallacies disguised as eloquence.
The irony is sharp. The more capable language models become, the more society will depend upon a shrinking cohort capable of recognising their limits.
There are dangers in this configuration.
First, intellectual stratification may harden into caste. If only a narrow elite understands how the models function and how to correct them, epistemic power becomes concentrated. The rest of society may lose not only employment but agency — deferring to outputs whose underlying logic they cannot interrogate.
Secondly, the hyper-intellectual class may be tempted by technocratic hubris. To educate the machines is to shape the informational diet of billions. The temptation to encode one’s own ideological preferences under the guise of optimisation will be immense. The old contest over curricula in universities may pale beside the struggle over training data and reinforcement parameters.
Thirdly, there is the risk of intellectual atrophy amongst the majority. If machines draft, summarise and reason on behalf of most citizens, the incentive to cultivate deep literacy diminishes. Why study logic when a model can produce an argument in seconds? Why master a language when translation is instantaneous? The human mind may become less an instrument of inquiry and more a consumer interface.
And yet there is also opportunity.
Freed from the drudgery of routine intellectual production, humanity may devote itself to genuinely creative, relational and moral pursuits. The hyper-intellectuals, in this vision, are not tyrants but custodians — ensuring that the machines remain tools rather than masters.
The key question is whether education systems will adapt quickly enough to produce such custodians. Superficial familiarity with prompts will not suffice. The new clerisy must possess breadth and depth — mathematics, philosophy, history, linguistics, jurisprudence. They must be capable of seeing connections across domains, because the models they supervise operate across domains.
The paradox of the age is that while machines simulate omniscience, the need for genuine polymathy intensifies.
The half-hour interview conducted by a language model that could not frame coherent questions about a doctoral thesis is a trivial anecdote. But it is symptomatic. The machine’s confidence outstripped its comprehension. It functioned, but it did not understand.
For now, the human candidate can still detect the gap.
In the near future, most people may not. They will accept fluency as authority. Only a minority — trained rigorously enough to perceive structural weakness beneath stylistic polish — will recognise when the emperor of algorithms is inadequately clothed.
Those individuals will shape the trajectory of artificial intelligence, whether they intend to or not. Their corrections will ripple outward through successive model generations. Their judgments about coherence and truth will become embedded in systems that mediate global discourse.
The industrial age created magnates of steel and oil. The digital age created magnates of data. The age of language models may create magnates of meaning — hyper-intellectuals whose influence derives not from ownership of factories or servers, but from mastery of thought itself.
Whether this development heralds a renaissance of scholarship or the entrenchment of a new epistemic oligarchy depends upon how consciously society responds. If access to deep education remains broad and rigorous, the clerisy may be permeable. If education declines into credentialism and surface familiarity, the gate will narrow.
The rise of large language models is less a technological question than a civilisational one. It forces us to ask what intelligence is for, and who is qualified to define it.
The machine may ask the questions. But for the foreseeable future, only the deeply educated human can determine whether those questions make sense.
