The Tyranny of the Ping: Life in the Age of Perpetual Interruption

There was once such a thing as silence. It did not necessarily mean that nothing was happening. A person might sit at a desk, walk through a city, eat dinner, read a book or stare through the window of a railway carriage while the machinery of the world continued perfectly well without demanding his immediate participation. Letters were travelling through the post, colleagues were working elsewhere, friends were getting on with their lives, newspapers were being printed and governments were rising and falling. Yet for an hour or two none of these things required us personally to do anything. That condition, once so commonplace as to be unremarkable, has become surprisingly difficult to achieve.
Modern life is instead accompanied by a peculiar electronic orchestra. The telephone pings because somebody has sent a message. It bings because somebody has sent another message through a different application. The laptop beeps because an email has arrived. A social media application produces a little chime because somebody has commented upon something we wrote three days ago. A banking application announces that money has entered or departed an account. A taxi application wants to tell us that the driver is two minutes away. An airline wishes to remind us to check in. A newspaper has decided that something occurring on the other side of the world is “breaking news”. A shopping application has discovered an offer that apparently cannot wait. If, in an attempt to restore some peace, we turn all these noises off, the telephone starts vibrating instead.
The defining characteristic of this electronic cacophony is not that any individual interruption is especially burdensome. Most take only seconds to dismiss. Rather, together they constitute an almost continuous claim upon consciousness. Modern communications technology has created a world in which thousands of people, companies and machines possess the technical ability to tap us upon the shoulder at virtually any moment of the day. The astonishing thing is how readily we have permitted them to do so.
The economics of interruption
There is an obvious economic explanation for much of this. Human attention is valuable because it is finite. There are only so many waking hours in a day and only so many things upon which a person can concentrate during them. Once an economy becomes sufficiently abundant in information, the scarce commodity is no longer information itself but the human capacity to attend to it. The digital economy has therefore created an enormous industry devoted to capturing, retaining and monetising attention.
This changes the incentives governing communications technology because the interests of the user and those of the application developer are not necessarily aligned. The user may want to know whether somebody important has written to him. The platform wants him to open the application. Once inside, perhaps he will remain there. He may see an advertisement, watch a video, reply to another message, read something recommended by an algorithm or purchase something. The notification is therefore not merely information; it is an invitation to enter a commercial environment in which somebody hopes to make money from our presence.
Its design reflects this. A little red circle containing the number “1” is astonishingly effective because it announces an unfinished task. Somewhere there is something we have not yet seen. The number becomes 2, then 7, then 23. Even when we know perfectly well that most of these things are unimportant, they create a minute sense of incompleteness. The device has transformed curiosity into obligation, and an application that has nothing genuinely important to tell us can nevertheless manufacture a reason for us to look at it.
This is why applications are so enthusiastic about notifications. A restaurant-booking application would ideally like permission to interrupt breakfast. A hotel application would like to know our location. A social network would like to notify us that somebody whom we barely know has posted something. Every company understands that if it waits politely until we choose to consult it, another company may have captured our attention first. Hence every participant in the attention economy has a rational incentive to become slightly more intrusive than its competitors, while the collective consequence of individually rational commercial decisions is a communications environment bordering upon madness.
The psychology of the unfinished task
There is something particularly insidious about electronic notifications because they exploit uncertainty. If every ping meant “nothing important”, we would rapidly learn to ignore them. If every ping meant “your house is on fire”, we would respond instantly. Instead a ping might mean anything. It might be a friend saying hello, a client with a crisis, an employer asking an urgent question, a family member in difficulty or somebody reacting with a thumbs-up symbol to a photograph of somebody else’s lunch. We cannot know until we look, and this uncertainty gives the notification much of its psychological power.
Each interruption presents the brain with a tiny unresolved question: what is it, does it matter and do I need to act? The quickest way of resolving the uncertainty is to reach for the telephone. The behaviour then becomes habitual until eventually the notification is hardly necessary. People begin checking their telephones in the absence of any external stimulus at all. A few moments of inactivity are enough. Waiting for a lift, standing in a supermarket queue or sitting for thirty seconds while somebody else leaves the room becomes an opportunity to inspect the little glowing rectangle. The technology initially interrupts us, but eventually we learn to interrupt ourselves.
The consequences extend considerably beyond irritation. Serious concentration requires continuity. Reading a difficult argument, writing carefully, solving a technical problem or simply thinking through an unfamiliar idea requires the mind to construct a temporary intellectual architecture. Concepts must be held together, connections explored and false paths abandoned. An interruption may last five seconds but its cost cannot sensibly be measured in seconds because the architecture has been disturbed. We must reconstruct where we were, what we were thinking and why the next step mattered.
The modern working day can therefore produce a curious sensation: intense activity without corresponding accomplishment. A person may spend ten hours answering messages, attending video calls, clearing notifications, replying to emails and moving between applications. At the end of the day he is exhausted, yet the one substantial thing he intended to do remains unfinished. He has been extraordinarily busy, but much of his busyness has consisted of responding to demands created by the communications infrastructure surrounding his actual work.
The invention of universal urgency
Electronic communication has also damaged an important social distinction: that between urgency and importance. A letter possessed no expectation of immediate response. An ordinary telephone call did, but because making one required somebody deliberately to telephone another person, calls carried a certain implied importance. Email initially occupied an intermediate category. It was quicker than post but asynchronous: one wrote when convenient and the recipient replied when convenient. Smartphones have substantially collapsed these distinctions.
Email, text messages, encrypted messaging applications, social-media messages, work collaboration platforms and video calls now converge upon the same device. The physical object that tells us our daughter has been taken to hospital is the same object that tells us a shoe shop has reduced trainers by 20 per cent. The machine possesses no natural hierarchy of significance. Everything arrives through variations upon the same ping, vibration, banner or red badge, leaving the human nervous system to undertake the sorting.
This produces social consequences because, once messages can be delivered instantaneously, people increasingly expect answers instantaneously. The sender knows that the recipient probably has his telephone with him. The little indicators may reveal that the message has been delivered or even read. Silence therefore acquires meaning, and “why haven’t you replied?” becomes a question that previous generations could rarely have asked after seventeen minutes. Technology has transformed the possibility of instantaneous communication into a social expectation of instantaneous availability.
The right to be unavailable has consequently diminished. Employers may communicate during evenings, clients may send messages at midnight and friends may expect conversations to continue indefinitely because messaging applications have no natural closing ritual. A telephone call ends when somebody says goodbye, whereas a messaging conversation can remain technically open for weeks. The working day leaks into the evening and the evening leaks into the night, while the boundary between professional and private life becomes less a line than a series of notification settings.
War and the telephone
In wartime Ukraine the phenomenon acquires an additional and darker dimension. The telephone that produces the banal notifications of ordinary digital existence also carries air-raid alerts, reports of missile launches, warnings about Shahed drones and messages from friends and relatives living beneath bombardment. The same nervous system is therefore asked to distinguish between trivia and danger, between a promotional offer and information that may determine whether one should move away from a window or seek shelter.
This is an extreme example of a wider problem. Notification systems work by creating conditioned responsiveness: a sound means attend now. Yet when hundreds of trivial applications employ essentially the same psychological mechanism, attention becomes simultaneously hypersensitive and exhausted. There is a cruel paradox here because the more alarms we receive, the less alarming alarms become. Systems designed to make us pay attention may, through sheer repetition, teach us not to.
Anyone who has lived for long periods beneath air-raid warnings understands the phenomenon in its most serious form. Human beings cannot sustain maximum vigilance indefinitely, so they habituate. The first siren may produce immediate action; the hundredth may produce little more than an irritated glance at an application showing the trajectory of incoming drones. The psychology that permits people to continue functioning in wartime has its civilian equivalent. We learn to ignore the electronic clamour because otherwise it would be impossible to live, yet ignoring it produces anxiety of its own because somewhere amongst the nonsense there may genuinely be something we need to know.
The destruction of boredom
Perhaps the strangest casualty of all this is boredom. Boredom has acquired an undeservedly poor reputation, although for most of human history it was an ordinary component of consciousness. People waited, walked, stared and sat beside windows. They endured railway journeys without entertainment. Children complained that there was nothing to do. These vacant periods were not necessarily pleasant, but from them came something valuable: unprompted thought.
The mind wandered because nobody was supplying it with anything else. Memories surfaced, problems rearranged themselves, fantasies developed and ideas appeared. People observed strangers, architecture, weather and landscapes. They discovered, sometimes reluctantly, the contents of their own minds. The smartphone has made it possible to abolish almost every such interval because there is always another article, photograph, message, video, game or fragment of news available to fill even the smallest crack in the day.
This may turn out to have substantial cultural consequences. Creativity does not consist exclusively in consuming more information. Often it requires precisely the opposite: sufficient empty mental space for existing information to combine in unexpected ways. A civilisation that cannot tolerate five minutes without stimulation may become extremely well informed while becoming progressively less reflective. We may discover that boredom was not an unfortunate defect in the organisation of pre-digital life but one of the conditions under which original thought flourished.
Relationships under notification
There is also a subtle interpersonal violence in the notification. Two people may be sitting together when a third person, hundreds of miles away, sends one of them a message. The absent person has effectively entered the room. The recipient looks down, eye contact is broken and the conversation pauses. Nothing dramatic has happened, yet a hierarchy has momentarily been established in which the person who is absent has displaced the person who is present.
Multiply this hundreds of times and something changes in social life. Meals become punctuated by glances at screens, meetings become exercises in divided attention, parents look at telephones while children speak to them and lovers lie beside one another communicating with other people. Everybody is connected and everybody is slightly elsewhere. The curious consequence of universal communications technology may therefore be a diminished capacity for the most elementary form of communication: paying sustained attention to the person immediately in front of us.
The problem is not principally bad manners. The technology has created an environment in which divided attention is normal and in which refusing interruption requires a conscious decision. To give one person undivided attention for an hour has consequently become almost an act of generosity. It says that, for this period at least, the potentially limitless demands of the rest of the world will have to wait.
A tax nobody measures
The economic costs deserve greater attention because organisations frequently measure employee hours while paying little attention to the fragmentation of those hours. Suppose an employee receives fifty work-related electronic interruptions during a day and each requires only a minute to process. The accounting fiction is that they consume fifty minutes. Yet this ignores the cost of switching attention. A person drafting a contract who stops to answer a message does not instantaneously return to precisely the same cognitive state, nor does a programmer, accountant, academic, engineer or journalist. There is a recovery period during which the mind reloads the problem.
The result is an invisible tax upon knowledge work. Worse still, organisations sometimes mistake rapid responsiveness for productivity. The employee who answers every message within thirty seconds appears diligent. The employee who disappears for three hours and produces an excellent piece of work may appear strangely uncommunicative.
Communications technology can therefore encourage businesses to reward the appearance of work at the expense of work itself, producing organisations in which everybody knows what everybody else is doing but progressively less substantial work gets done.
Artificial intelligence may intensify this problem before it solves it. Machines can already generate messages, summaries, reminders, reports and requests far more rapidly than human beings can read them. As agentic systems become more common, one machine may begin sending communications to another machine, with human beings copied into the resulting stream. The marginal cost of producing a competent email or memorandum may approach zero while the human cost of reading it remains stubbornly finite. We could therefore enter the peculiar situation in which technology solves the problem of information production so effectively that it creates an overwhelming problem of information consumption.
The sensible use of artificial intelligence should eventually move in the opposite direction. Instead of generating ever more communications, intelligent systems ought to become guardians of human attention. They should decide which messages genuinely require interruption, which can wait until tomorrow, which can be summarised together and which need never be shown to us at all. The most valuable artificial-intelligence assistant may not be the one that speaks most often but the one that knows when to remain silent.
Reclaiming silence
None of this requires nostalgia for a pre-digital age. Contemporary communications are miraculous. A person in Lviv can speak instantaneously with somebody in London, Washington or Tokyo. Families separated by war can remain in daily contact. Medical advice can cross continents. Photographs can reach loved ones in seconds. Businesses that once required offices, secretaries, fax machines and international couriers can be conducted from a laptop. The problem is not communication itself but the absence of boundaries around it.
We have constructed extraordinarily powerful systems for allowing other people to reach us without developing equally powerful social conventions governing when they should not. The obvious technological remedies are useful: disabling unnecessary notifications, distinguishing important contacts, using silent modes and allocating periods for uninterrupted work. Yet the deeper solution is cultural. We must recover the idea that accessibility is not an obligation and that a message does not acquire moral priority merely because it can travel at the speed of light.
There ought to be nothing remarkable about answering an email tomorrow. A person reading a book should not feel obliged to stop because somebody has sent him a photograph. An employee should be able to finish a difficult piece of work before examining the accumulated chatter of an office messaging system. Friends ought to understand that affection is not measured in response times. We need, in other words, to rediscover the legitimacy of temporary absence from the communications network.
Above all, we might rediscover that consciousness does not need to be permanently occupied. The most luxurious commodity of the twenty-first century may ultimately prove not to be money, information or connectivity but an hour in which nobody can reach you; no application wants anything from you; no red circle announces unfinished business; no machine vibrates in your pocket; and there is no ping, beep or bing to suggest that somewhere, somebody or something has decided that what it wants deserves precedence over what you were already thinking.
For most of human history, long periods of this sort were simply part of ordinary life. We may eventually come to understand that technological progress need not mean surrendering them, and that one of the most important freedoms in a connected civilisation is the freedom, from time to time, to disconnect.
