The Long Winter: What the Next Fighting Season May Bring in Ukraine

Wars acquire rhythms. The Russia–Ukraine war has now lasted long enough for those rhythms to have become familiar, although never entirely predictable. Summer permits movement, autumn turns fields and secondary roads into mud, winter freezes them again and spring begins another cycle. Yet the technological character of this war has changed so radically that the seasons no longer dictate military operations in quite the way they once did. The forthcoming autumn and winter campaign of 2026–27 is unlikely to resemble the great mechanised manoeuvres imagined in NATO textbooks. It is more likely to become an enormous contest of attrition — fought simultaneously by infantrymen in ruined villages, drones above the front, missiles hundreds of kilometres behind it and engineers struggling to keep electricity flowing through Ukrainian cities.


The central prediction of this essay is therefore relatively straightforward. Russia will probably continue to attack, particularly in Donetsk Oblast, but without achieving the dramatic operational breakthrough that Moscow periodically announces. Ukraine will probably continue a strategy of elastic defence combined with selective counterattacks and increasingly ambitious attacks upon Russian logistics, energy infrastructure and military industry. Meanwhile the most consequential Russian offensive may take place not on the battlefield at all, but against Ukraine’s electricity and heating systems.


This will be a winter fought at the front — and in people’s homes.


Russia’s unfinished summer offensive


The first point to understand is that Russia enters the autumn without having achieved the decisive results that might reasonably have been expected from the resources committed to its spring and summer campaign. The rate of Russian advance has remained comparatively slow. Assessments during August described Moscow’s spring–summer offensive as producing limited territorial progress even after several months of fighting.


This matters because the Kremlin faces an old military dilemma. It can either consolidate what it has taken or continue attacking in the hope that cumulative Ukrainian exhaustion will eventually produce a rupture.


Everything about Russian conduct suggests that Moscow will choose the latter.


The principal Russian objective is likely to remain the remainder of Donetsk Oblast. The struggle around the Ukrainian defensive belt centred upon the remaining major cities of the region is therefore likely to dominate the land campaign. Russian operations have already displayed preparations consistent with attempting to weaken this defensive system before larger assaults, while Russian tactical aviation continues to provide an important advantage through extensive use of glide bombs.


Yet we should be cautious about translating tactical pressure into predictions of imminent strategic collapse. That mistake has been made repeatedly during this war.


Russia’s characteristic method has increasingly become one of accumulation rather than breakthrough. Small infantry groups probe Ukrainian positions. Drones identify firing points and supply routes. Artillery, FPV drones and glide bombs attempt to destroy or isolate them. Further infantry groups then advance into the resulting gaps. The process may gain hundreds of metres or several kilometres but it does not necessarily produce the exploitation phase that traditionally turns a tactical breach into an operational victory.


The tank has consequently become less the instrument of breakthrough than an occasional component in an extraordinarily dense reconnaissance-strike environment. Large armoured concentrations can be detected long before they reach their objectives. The battlefield has become increasingly transparent.


The paradox of modern warfare is that armies can see almost everything while being able safely to move almost nothing.


The battle for the Donbas


The most dangerous sector during the autumn is therefore likely to remain eastern Ukraine.

Russia has an obvious political reason for concentrating upon Donetsk Oblast. Occupation of the whole region would permit the Kremlin to announce completion of one of the principal territorial objectives repeatedly associated with the war. Militarily it would also force Ukraine away from a network of cities, industrial settlements, roads and prepared positions that collectively constitute its strongest remaining defensive geography in the east.


Hence the battles approaching the principal Ukrainian-held urban belt may become exceptionally violent.


But cities are difficult things to conquer.


The Russians discovered this at Mariupol, Bakhmut and elsewhere. An urban area can be destroyed relatively easily; occupying it against determined infantry is something different. Every industrial building, basement and apartment block can become a defensive position. Moreover the attacker must expose logistics routes extending behind advancing forces, precisely the sort of targets against which Ukrainian drones have become increasingly effective.


Russia may therefore attempt less to storm major cities frontally than to make them untenable.


That means pressure upon roads, bridges, logistics centres and surrounding settlements. It means attempting to create fire control over Ukrainian supply corridors. It means pushing Ukrainian drone operators and artillery progressively farther from the front. Fibre-optic FPV drones, which are resistant to conventional radio-frequency electronic warfare, have already become part of this contest.


The objective will be isolation before occupation.


Ukraine’s answer is unlikely to be the defence of every metre of territory. Kyiv has little reason to exchange scarce experienced soldiers for fields possessing no particular strategic significance. Ukrainian commanders instead have an incentive to impose disproportionate costs, withdraw where positions become tactically irrational and counterattack when Russian troops become overextended.


The map may therefore continue turning slowly red without the strategic situation necessarily turning decisively in Russia’s favour.


That distinction is essential.


The autumn mud


Then comes the rain.


The famous rasputitsa has sometimes been exaggerated in commentary about Ukraine. Modern armies are not immobilised simply because fields become muddy. Nevertheless the autumn weather disproportionately affects heavy vehicles and logistics away from paved roads.


This will reinforce trends already evident in the war.


Large mechanised attacks will become less attractive. Infantry infiltration, motorcycles, light vehicles and drones will become relatively more important. Roads will acquire still greater tactical significance and therefore become increasingly dangerous because drones will watch them continuously.


The battlefield may consequently become narrower.


Instead of armies manoeuvring across broad spaces, fighting will concentrate around villages, tree lines, roads and logistical corridors. The resulting combat will often appear insignificant when viewed on a strategic map. A plantation, railway embankment or collection of ruined houses may nevertheless consume dozens or hundreds of lives because controlling it influences the survivability of positions farther along the line.


There will still be local surprises. Ukraine has demonstrated an ability to mount counterattacks where Russian forces have become stretched, including operations in southern sectors during 2026. But a vast Ukrainian offensive resembling the ambitions of 2023 appears improbable unless battlefield circumstances change dramatically.

Ukraine does not need one.


Its strategic problem is increasingly different.


Ukraine attacks Russia


Ukraine’s most important offensive during the coming months may take place hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from the trenches.


The Ukrainian long-range strike campaign has been steadily evolving from spectacular raids into something closer to systematic economic warfare. Oil refineries, fuel installations, military factories, airfields, ammunition facilities and logistical infrastructure offer Ukraine an opportunity to impose costs upon Russia without undertaking immensely expensive territorial offensives.


Recent attacks demonstrate the increasing scale of this campaign. In mid-August Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russia in one of its largest long-range attacks of the war.


The significance is greater than the physical damage caused by any individual drone.


Russia must defend an enormous territory.


Every air-defence battery protecting a refinery deep inside Russia is one unavailable elsewhere. Every factory periodically stopping production because employees are sheltering imposes an economic cost. Every fuel installation requiring repair consumes engineers, components and money. Every Russian region discovering that the war is no longer something occurring exclusively on television experiences a modest erosion of the Kremlin’s central political fiction — that ordinary Russians can live normal lives while the state conducts an indefinite war.


Ukraine therefore has powerful incentives to expand this campaign through the autumn and winter.


Russia will attempt to adapt. Air defences will move. Important installations will acquire additional protection. Electronic warfare will proliferate. Drone routes will change.

Then Ukrainian routes will change as well.


This technological Darwinism now occurs in weeks rather than years.


Russia’s winter offensive against electricity


The most predictable Russian operation is also potentially the most dangerous.

Russia will attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.


Indeed she is already doing so.


On 20 August Russia launched another major combined missile and drone attack, continuing a pattern in which missiles appear to be accumulated and then expended in concentrated salvos. Energy installations have continued to suffer repeated attacks, while assessments have warned of preparations for renewed pressure upon the electricity system before winter.


The strategic logic is obvious.


A missile destroying a transformer may achieve more than a missile destroying a tank.

Ukraine is a modern industrial society. Electricity runs railway signalling, telecommunications, factories, water pumps, hospitals, heating systems and countless other elements of national resilience. The electricity grid has therefore become part of the battlefield. Russia has attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure systematically since 2022 and the cumulative damage makes each subsequent winter harder to manage.


The likely Russian strategy will involve saturation.


Cheap drones can be sent in substantial numbers to exhaust or expose Ukrainian air defences. More sophisticated missiles can follow. Routes and timings can be varied. Some attacks will concentrate upon generation, others upon transmission and distribution infrastructure. The object is not necessarily permanent nationwide blackout — an extraordinarily difficult objective — but recurring disruption.


The psychological dimension matters as much as the electrical one.


A population experiencing four hours without electricity is inconvenienced. A population experiencing repeated days without electricity, heating or reliable water during freezing weather is being subjected to strategic pressure.


Moscow has repeatedly hoped that civilian hardship will weaken Ukrainian political determination.


So far it has largely produced the opposite effect.


Nevertheless resilience should not be confused with invulnerability. The winter of 2026–27 may prove exceptionally difficult because infrastructure that has been repaired repeatedly becomes progressively harder to restore. Spare equipment is finite. Generating capacity cannot always be replaced quickly and air-defence interceptors are considerably more expensive than many of the drones they must destroy.


The struggle over electricity may consequently become the most important campaign of the winter.


The economics of the drone war


This leads to perhaps the greatest military question of the coming season: who wins the economics of unmanned warfare?


Russia has greatly expanded its long-range drone capabilities and has continued developing its launch infrastructure. Recent assessments report expansion of launch sites along Ukraine’s borders, while Russian drone designs and tactics continue evolving.


Ukraine is simultaneously building an increasingly formidable drone system of her own.


The result is an extraordinary industrial competition.


The decisive measurement is no longer merely the number of tanks or artillery pieces each country possesses. It is the number of drones that factories can produce each month, the price of those drones, their resistance to electronic warfare, the availability of trained operators, the sophistication of targeting software and — crucially — the ability to replace designs as soon as the enemy develops countermeasures.


A drone design may have a battlefield life measured in months.


Sometimes weeks.


The advantage therefore belongs not merely to whoever manufactures the most weapons but to whoever possesses the shortest innovation cycle.


Ukraine retains unusual strengths here because its defence technology industry operates partly through decentralised private initiative. Russia possesses the countervailing advantages of scale, state resources and an increasingly mature wartime industrial system.

The autumn and winter will test these competing models.


Winter does not necessarily stop armies


When the mud freezes, mobility may actually improve.


This creates the possibility of a second phase of Russian ground operations during the deepest winter months. Frozen fields permit vehicles to travel where autumn mud prevented them. Vegetation disappears, however, making concealment harder. Thermal imaging becomes especially useful. Soldiers must consume greater quantities of supplies merely to remain alive.


Winter therefore simultaneously facilitates movement and punishes exposure.


The Russians may use periods of hard frost for renewed local assaults. But the idea of a gigantic winter armoured offensive racing across Ukraine seems improbable under present battlefield conditions. The density of drones, mines and precision fires makes massing forces extraordinarily dangerous.


More likely is continued grinding pressure.


Russia will probe many points in the hope that one breaks.


This is the essence of the Russian theory of victory in 2026. Moscow does not necessarily need a brilliant manoeuvre. It needs to believe that time favours Russia — that Ukrainian manpower, Western political patience or Ukrainian infrastructure will eventually fail before Russian resources do.


Ukraine’s strategy must therefore prove that assumption wrong.


The manpower question


Behind all the technology lies an older and uglier truth.


Wars are fought by people.


Ukraine’s most serious constraint remains manpower. Russia has a much larger population and can therefore sustain losses that would be politically and demographically intolerable for many European countries. But Russian manpower is not infinite either. Recruiting soldiers requires progressively greater financial inducements and casualties impose cumulative social and economic costs.


Ukraine cannot sensibly compete by exchanging soldiers with Russia at equal rates.

Its strategy must therefore remain asymmetric: drones instead of infantry where possible, precision instead of mass, fortification instead of exposed manoeuvre and attacks upon Russian logistics rather than costly frontal assaults.


This is also why apparently modest Ukrainian territorial withdrawals should not automatically be interpreted as strategic defeats.


Territory can sometimes be recovered.


Experienced soldiers cannot.


The Black Sea and the southern war


The southern theatre will remain important even if the principal land battles occur in Donetsk.

Russia has continued attacking Ukrainian port infrastructure, including facilities around the Black Sea region. Ukraine in turn has powerful incentives to continue making Crimea and Russian military facilities around the Black Sea expensive and difficult to operate.


The maritime campaign illustrates perhaps better than any other part of the war how radically military power has changed.


Ukraine entered the full-scale invasion with no conventional navy capable of matching Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Yet missiles, maritime drones, aerial drones and intelligence have progressively constrained Russian naval freedom.


The lesson will continue into winter.


You do not necessarily defeat an expensive weapons platform by building another expensive weapons platform.


Sometimes you build ten thousand cheap things.


The possibility of surprise


Every prediction about war should include a warning against prediction.


Armies are adaptive institutions and commanders deliberately attempt to do what their opponents do not expect.


There may therefore be surprises.


Russia could shift forces towards a secondary front to compel Ukraine to redeploy reserves. Ukraine could mount another limited counteroffensive against an exposed salient. New drone technologies might suddenly alter the balance in a particular sector. Political events could affect weapons supplies. A particularly successful strike against logistics or command infrastructure might create a temporary operational opportunity.


But the probability of a single event transforming the entire war remains comparatively low.

The battlefield has become remarkably resistant to decisive manoeuvre because surveillance makes concentration difficult. Any substantial formation approaching the front attracts drones. Those drones summon other drones, artillery and missiles.


The modern battlefield punishes ambition.


What victory will look like by spring


By March 2027 the maps may therefore look surprisingly similar to those of August 2026.

Russia will probably have gained territory.


Ukraine may have regained territory elsewhere.


Several towns currently behind the Ukrainian lines may have become frontline cities. Others may have survived Russian attempts to approach them. Thousands more drones will have crossed the border in both directions. Refineries will have burned in Russia and power stations will have burned in Ukraine.


Both governments will announce that these events demonstrate that time favours them.


Neither proposition will necessarily be true.


The decisive question will instead concern relative exhaustion.


Can Russia continue recruiting soldiers at politically acceptable cost? Can her economy continue financing a gigantic military establishment while absorbing Ukrainian attacks upon energy and industrial infrastructure? Can Ukraine maintain sufficient infantry to hold the front? Can Europe and the United States provide enough air defence, ammunition and financial assistance? Can Ukrainian engineers keep electricity, heating and railways operating through another winter?


These questions are less dramatic than arrows drawn across maps.


They are also more important.


The fifth winter


Ukraine is approaching the fifth winter of the full-scale invasion.


That fact alone tells us something remarkable about the failure of Russia’s original strategy. A campaign intended to extinguish Ukrainian sovereignty rapidly has instead become a vast industrial war whose front has moved relatively little in recent years.


Yet endurance is not victory and Ukraine faces an exceptionally dangerous period. Russia will probably spend the autumn trying to grind deeper into Donetsk Oblast while preparing the battlefield around Ukraine’s remaining eastern defensive belt. It will use infantry infiltration, drones, glide bombs and enormous quantities of expendable matériel rather than rely principally upon spectacular armoured breakthroughs.


Ukraine will seek to preserve its soldiers, counterattack selectively and expand the deep-strike campaign against Russian logistics, military industry and energy infrastructure.


Then winter will bring the second battlefield.


Russia will attempt to turn darkness and cold into weapons. Ukraine will attempt to make the Russian rear progressively less safe. Each side will increasingly strike not merely the other’s army but the industrial system sustaining that army.


The war is consequently becoming simultaneously smaller and larger.


At the front it is shrinking into contests between tiny groups of soldiers and individual drones over tree lines and shattered villages.


Behind the front it is expanding across thousands of kilometres — encompassing electrical grids, oil refineries, factories, railways, telecommunications, computer systems and national economies.


That is likely to be the character of the autumn and winter war of 2026–27.


There may be no great breakthrough. There may be no decisive winter offensive and there may be no moment at which historians can point to a single battle and say that there the war was won.


Instead there will be rain, mud, frost, drones and darkness.


And sometime next spring, when the snow melts and the black Ukrainian earth becomes mud once more, the two armies may discover that the most important territory gained over the winter was not measured in square kilometres.


It was measured in which country still possessed the greater capacity — economic, military and human — to endure another year.
