The Front Line Is Getting Hotter

There has always been a peculiar vocabulary surrounding war. Battles are described as “hot”; particularly dangerous sectors become “hot spots”; soldiers speak of coming under “heat”; and military communiqués routinely identify the “hottest” sections of a front. Yet in Ukraine, after more than four and a half years of full-scale war, these metaphors have acquired an increasingly literal quality. The front line has become hotter in almost every conceivable sense: physically, technologically, geographically and psychologically. What was already one of the most dangerous environments human beings could inhabit is evolving into something qualitatively different, in which the distinction between the front and the rear is disappearing and the battlefield itself is becoming an enormous zone of continuous observation and intermittent destruction.


Part of this transformation is simply meteorological. Ukrainian summers can be brutally hot, particularly across the open agricultural landscapes of the south and east, where shade is scarce and the earth rapidly becomes dry and dusty. Temperatures in the mid-thirties Celsius are uncomfortable enough in civilian clothes; they acquire an altogether different significance when a person is wearing body armour, a helmet and combat equipment while carrying ammunition, batteries, radios, water and medical supplies. Trenches and underground positions can be poorly ventilated, vehicles become ovens and water has to be transported forward along routes that may themselves be under observation. Heat aggravates exhaustion, interferes with sleep, increases the risks associated with wounds and infection and places additional strain upon machines and electronic equipment.


Modern warfare may increasingly be digital, but the people conducting it remain biological organisms. Soldiers need water, sleep, food and tolerable temperatures. Batteries need charging, generators need fuel and vehicles need cooling and maintenance. Electronic warfare systems, communications equipment and computers must continue operating amid dust, heat and vibration. One of the paradoxes of contemporary warfare is that some of the most technologically sophisticated military systems ever devised remain dependent upon profoundly mundane things: cans of diesel, bottles of water, electrical cables, mechanics and exhausted men carrying boxes from one place to another.


Yet physical temperature is only the beginning of the story, because the battlefield has become hotter in a more important sense. The density of technologies capable of finding and killing people has increased dramatically. The Ukrainian front is no longer best understood as a relatively narrow strip of trenches separated by a no-man’s-land, with increasingly safe territory extending behind each side. Instead it is becoming a broad and fluctuating zone of danger extending many kilometres behind the nominal line of contact. Reconnaissance drones, FPV drones, fibre-optic drones, artillery, glide bombs, loitering munitions and electronic surveillance overlap one another to create an environment in which movement itself may attract lethal attention.


The disappearance of the rear


During earlier phases of the war there remained a meaningful distinction between being at the front and being behind it. A soldier might leave a forward trench and travel several kilometres backwards before entering an environment that, although hardly safe, felt substantially different. Vehicles moved relatively freely, ammunition accumulated at logistics points, mechanics repaired equipment in yards and soldiers congregated around command posts or accommodation. There were places in which one could smoke a cigarette outside a building, walk across a road or drive a conspicuous vehicle without assuming that somebody was watching.


That distinction has progressively disappeared. Drones have transformed enormous areas behind the nominal front into hunting grounds, and the consequence is that many activities once regarded as routine military logistics have become potentially lethal operations. Moving ammunition forward, evacuating a casualty, rotating infantry, delivering food or simply driving between positions may attract reconnaissance drones, which in turn may summon FPVs or artillery. Roads that once served as ordinary supply routes are covered with anti-drone netting; vehicles move rapidly between patches of concealment; soldiers learn which stretches of road are particularly dangerous and which hours offer the greatest possibility of passing unnoticed.


The psychological consequences are profound because drone warfare creates an unusual intimacy between hunter and victim. Artillery is terrifying, but artillery traditionally contains an element of abstraction. A shell may have been fired because somebody calculated that a particular grid square probably contained enemy troops. An FPV drone feels different. When it changes direction to follow a particular vehicle, circles an obstacle or pursues an individual soldier, its victim understands that somewhere another human being may be watching and making decisions specifically about him. The violence ceases to feel statistical and becomes personal.


The front therefore grows hotter even when nothing is exploding. A soldier may sit in silence knowing that the sky above him contains cameras. He may understand that an apparently insignificant movement could reveal his position, that a vehicle arriving with supplies could disclose the location of his shelter or that the evacuation of a wounded colleague could attract a second attack. The pressure comes not merely from being attacked but from the possibility of being observed continuously and without knowing when observation has begun.


Everything burns


Then there is fire itself. The Ukrainian countryside during summer becomes extraordinarily combustible. Dry grass, crops, woodland, abandoned buildings and damaged vehicles provide abundant fuel, while artillery shells, exploding drones and burning equipment provide innumerable sources of ignition. A relatively small explosion can therefore create consequences extending far beyond its blast radius as vegetation catches fire, smoke spreads across positions and soldiers are forced to choose between remaining concealed amid flames and moving into terrain exposed to enemy drones.


Fire also interacts with the increasingly electronic character of the battlefield. Smoke may obscure some forms of observation while revealing that something important is happening at a particular location. Heat affects batteries and electronics. Generators and air-conditioning equipment, where available, require electricity or fuel. Vehicles already operating under enormous mechanical strain become still harder to maintain. Ukraine’s damaged electricity infrastructure adds another layer of vulnerability because the same electrical power required by civilians for refrigeration and cooling is also indispensable to an army whose battlefield increasingly depends upon batteries, computers and communications equipment.


The result is a peculiar combination of the futuristic and the primitive. A soldier may be operating within a military system involving satellites, artificial intelligence, thermal cameras, encrypted digital communications and remotely controlled aircraft while nevertheless worrying principally about whether somebody can bring him enough drinking water before nightfall. Technology has transformed the means by which people find and kill one another without abolishing any of the ancient physical requirements of keeping human beings alive.


The technological greenhouse


There is another sense in which the Ukrainian battlefield resembles an environment whose temperature continually rises. Every successful technological innovation encourages a countermeasure, which then produces another innovation, which demands another countermeasure. Reconnaissance drones locate soldiers, so soldiers acquire electronic warfare systems. Drone manufacturers change frequencies to defeat those systems. Fibre-optic drones circumvent radio jamming altogether. Vehicles acquire cages, electronic protection and improvised armour. Drone operators learn to attack their vulnerable points. Roads are covered with protective netting, and pilots learn to fly beneath, around or through gaps in it.


Neither side achieves permanent technological superiority because successful innovations are copied with extraordinary speed. The result is not equilibrium but accumulation. A Ukrainian infantryman in 2022 might principally have feared Russian artillery, tanks, infantry and aircraft. His counterpart in 2026 must consider artillery, glide bombs, reconnaissance drones, conventional FPVs, fibre-optic FPVs, loitering munitions and combinations of these systems operating together. Russian soldiers face Ukraine’s own rapidly evolving ecosystem of unmanned weapons, electronic warfare and increasingly sophisticated targeting systems.


This explains one of the most important developments of the war: both armies increasingly seek to remove human beings from the hottest parts of the battlefield. Unmanned ground vehicles can transport ammunition, food and water, evacuate casualties, lay mines and sometimes undertake offensive operations. Drones increasingly perform reconnaissance missions that once required soldiers to expose themselves. Machines are being inserted wherever possible between human beings and the enemy because the calculation is brutally simple. If a task has become sufficiently dangerous that sending a man is likely to result in his death, then it is preferable to send a machine.


This is not technological enthusiasm of the sort displayed at defence exhibitions or military conferences. It is adaptation driven by casualty rates. The battlefield is becoming so lethal that the armies fighting upon it are gradually concluding that the most effective way to preserve soldiers is to keep them away from it wherever possible.


The infantryman’s paradox


Yet this technological revolution creates a striking paradox. The more sophisticated the battlefield becomes, the more primitive the existence of the infantryman may become. A soldier surrounded by some of the most advanced military technology ever deployed can spend weeks living underground. He may have difficulty obtaining fresh water, wash rarely, sleep beside ammunition and emerge principally at night. He may walk considerable distances because vehicles are too conspicuous and avoid apparently trivial activities because almost anything that produces heat, light, movement or electronic emissions may betray his position.


There is something almost medieval about human beings sheltering underground from machines circling above them. The most technologically sophisticated land war in history has recreated aspects of siege warfare and subterranean existence familiar from conflicts centuries ago. The technology belongs to the twenty-first century while the physical experience of the soldier may consist of darkness, dirt, thirst, insects, fear and prolonged confinement.


This is why casualty figures alone can never describe adequately what service on the contemporary Ukrainian front entails. The experience increasingly consists of prolonged periods of confinement punctuated by episodes of extraordinary violence. A position does not have to be under continuous bombardment to be intolerably dangerous. Indeed the battlefield can be frightening precisely because it is quiet. Silence no longer implies safety.


When silence becomes dangerous


Earlier forms of warfare frequently announced danger acoustically. Tanks could be heard approaching, artillery batteries opened fire, aircraft passed overhead and incoming shells produced recognisable sounds. Drone warfare has altered the sensory landscape. Sometimes the most frightening sound on the battlefield is a faint buzzing noise; sometimes there is virtually no warning at all.


Fibre-optic FPV drones have intensified this problem because they cannot be defeated through conventional radio-frequency jamming in the same way as ordinary remotely controlled drones. Reconnaissance may meanwhile be taking place without the people being watched knowing anything about it. A soldier may therefore inhabit an apparently peaceful landscape while being intensely observed. The absence of shooting tells him little about whether he is safe.


This produces a distinctive psychological pressure. The soldier must assume that virtually any movement may be seen. A person crossing open ground, a vehicle entering a courtyard or a group gathering around a building may provide sufficient information for an attack. The result is that the modern battlefield increasingly empties during daylight. Vehicles hide beneath trees or camouflage, soldiers remain beneath cover and logistics moves wherever possible at night or through unmanned systems. What looks from a distance like an abandoned landscape may contain hundreds of people, cameras and weapons.


The battlefield has consequently become simultaneously emptier and more crowded. Human beings disappear from view while machines multiply above them. The traditional visual image of warfare — masses of soldiers, columns of vehicles and formations moving across open ground — is becoming increasingly obsolete because concentration invites destruction. The safest soldier is frequently the soldier nobody can see.


The expanding front


These changes have particularly serious implications for the Ukrainian cities immediately behind the eastern front. Places such as Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka cannot be understood simply as civilian settlements behind soldiers fighting somewhere farther east. As Russian reconnaissance and strike capabilities extend farther into Ukrainian-held territory, these cities are progressively incorporated into the technological envelope of the battlefield itself.


This transformation is gradual, which perhaps makes it more disturbing. A grocery shop remains open, a café serves coffee and buses continue running. People walk dogs, buy cigarettes and return to apartments in the evening. Yet drones appear increasingly often, guided bombs strike districts once regarded as relatively secure and roads that civilians have travelled for years acquire new risks. Ordinary life does not disappear at a single identifiable moment. Instead the front seeps into it.


This is another sense in which everything becomes hotter. The geographical area within which civilians can sustain something resembling normality contracts as the effective depth of the battlefield increases. Places that were once rear areas become logistics zones; logistics zones become drone zones; drone zones become places in which ordinary civilian movement itself requires calculations about time, route and visibility.


The transformation also changes what we mean when we say that a city is “near the front”. Distance measured in kilometres is increasingly misleading. Twenty kilometres may once have represented a meaningful degree of separation from infantry combat. In a battlefield dominated by long-range drones, glide bombs and precision artillery, it may represent very little. The relevant question is no longer simply how far a settlement lies from Russian infantry but what weapons can reach it, how frequently drones fly above it and whether the roads connecting it to the rest of Ukraine can still be used safely.


Autumn will not cool the war


The physical heat of summer will disappear. Autumn rain will turn roads and fields into mud, leaves will fall from trees and the changing landscape will alter patterns of concealment. Eventually winter will arrive and soldiers will confront the opposite physical problem: freezing temperatures, ice, snow, wet clothing and the difficulty of remaining warm without producing thermal signatures visible to enemy sensors.


Yet meteorological cooling should not be confused with military cooling. The technological competition will continue regardless of the season. Weather that restricts some drone operations may create opportunities for mechanised movement; bare trees may make concealment more difficult; winter conditions may increase the logistical burden upon troops whose supply routes are already under continuous observation. Each season changes the character of the danger without necessarily diminishing it.


This may be the defining characteristic of the Ukrainian battlefield after years of full-scale war. There is no stable technological equilibrium. Every adaptation produces a counter-adaptation. Every apparently safer method of movement eventually becomes vulnerable. Every sanctuary gradually becomes exposed. The military temperature therefore continues rising even when the thermometer falls.


Maps do a poor job of conveying this reality. They encourage us to imagine the war as a coloured line moving backwards and forwards across the Donbas countryside. A village is lost, a tree line is regained, Russian forces advance several hundred metres or Ukrainian troops counterattack. These movements matter, but the more profound transformation is occurring in depth rather than merely along the line itself.


The zone in which it is dangerous to drive has expanded. The zone in which it is dangerous to walk has expanded. The zone in which civilians fear drones has expanded. The distances across which soldiers must move covertly have expanded, as has the length of time troops may remain isolated in forward positions because vehicles cannot safely reach them. A few kilometres on a map can therefore conceal a radical transformation in the experience of the people living and fighting there.


The front line is becoming less a line than an atmosphere: an atmosphere of observation, exhaustion, electronics, dust, fire, heat and fear. Human beings retreat underground or into concealment while inexpensive machines search the landscape above them. The objective of both sides is increasingly to see without being seen, to strike without exposing a soldier and to substitute machines for people wherever the technology permits.


This may ultimately be one of the most significant military lessons Ukraine is teaching the world. The battlefield of the future may not consist principally of enormous armies charging towards one another with increasingly powerful weapons. It may instead become an eerily empty landscape in which relatively small numbers of exhausted human beings hide beneath the earth while vast numbers of inexpensive machines search relentlessly for anything that moves.


The Ukrainian front has become extraordinarily hot. The more unsettling conclusion is that Ukraine may simply be experiencing first what warfare everywhere is destined to become.
