A tribute to Lviv and Naples wins in New York: a poetic short documentary on urban wounds, memory, and music
The short documentary “L’Viv Napoli: The Music That Echoed Back”, directed by Italian filmmaker and writer Fabio Izzo, has just won Best Short Documentary at the prestigious East Village Film Festival in New York (2025).
A poetic and emotional journey, the film explores the spiritual connection between Lviv and Naples, two cities that — despite their distance — echo similar wounds, resilience, and music. Through archive images, original footage, and soundscapes, the short draws a visual and musical dialogue between Ukraine and Southern Italy.
“Lviv is not just a backdrop, but a living, breathing place in this film. I see it as a twin city to Naples: full of culture, beauty, trauma, and an unstoppable desire to be heard”
- says director Fabio Izzo, who has studied Slavic languages and lived in Poland before moving to Naples.
A cross-cultural reflection on memory and resistance
The film was also selected at:
Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (2025)
Madonie Film Festival – Sicily (Best First Time Director)
This recognition opens the possibility for future screenings in Ukraine and Europe, with the hope of bringing the film back to Lviv, where much of its spirit was born.
