How Ukrainians Relax During War

War imposes a relentless strain upon those who endure it. The sirens, the dislocation, the empty chairs at family tables—all combine to create a burden that would overwhelm most societies. Yet Ukrainians, faced with the unending demands of resistance, have also found ways to rest, to breathe, and to recover fragments of normality. Relaxation in wartime Ukraine is not a luxury; it is a survival mechanism, a quiet but vital form of defiance.
The Search for Everyday Normality
For many, relaxation takes the form of small rituals that reassert continuity with pre-war life. Families gather around television series streamed online, or take comfort in preparing traditional dishes even when ingredients are scarce. Coffee culture, once a hallmark of Ukraine’s urban life, continues in basements, parks, and on kerbsides near sandbagged cafés. These habits are not trivial. They are gestures of permanence, reminders that life persists despite the violence pressing at the edges of the city.
Music and Cultural Expression
Concerts, often improvised in shelters or subway stations, have become a hallmark of wartime leisure. Local musicians perform folk songs, jazz standards, or contemporary ballads for audiences whose applause echoes against concrete walls. In Lviv and Kyiv, theatres stage productions with adjusted schedules, ending early enough for spectators to return home before curfew. Literature, too, offers respite. Book clubs have adapted to hybrid formats, half in person and half online, as readers explore themes of endurance and belonging. Culture, in this sense, is not merely entertainment but a form of spiritual rest.
Nature as Refuge
Ukraine’s parks, forests, and rivers have long been sources of solace, and in wartime they have acquired renewed significance. Even in embattled cities, residents seek green corners where the hum of drones and artillery feels further away. Picnics in relatively safe regions of western Ukraine, hiking in the Carpathians, or fishing on the banks of the Dnipro represent more than pastimes. They are opportunities to recharge in the presence of landscapes that remind Ukrainians of the beauty of the country they are defending.
Sports and Shared Energy
Sport has endured as another outlet for relaxation. Football matches are played under restrictions, with air raid interruptions a constant possibility. Gyms operate when electricity and safety conditions allow. Even modest exercise in communal courtyards provides a way to release tension. Watching international sporting events, particularly when Ukrainian athletes compete, has become a communal experience, producing moments of collective pride that offset the anxieties of war.
Humour and Satire
Perhaps unexpectedly, humour has flourished as a coping mechanism. Satirical sketches, memes, and jokes circulate widely, often mocking Russia’s leadership or the absurdities of daily life under bombardment. This gallows humour both lightens the mood and creates bonds of solidarity, allowing people to laugh together at circumstances too bleak to face without irony.
The Role of Community
Above all, relaxation during war is communal. Neighbours cook meals together in blackout conditions, share generators, and celebrate birthdays in shelters. Weddings and baptisms are still held, sometimes in abbreviated forms, as declarations that life must continue. These gatherings provide the greatest relief of all: the comfort of human connection.
Rest as Resistance
How Ukrainians relax during war is not incidental to their struggle. Rest is part of resilience, a way of maintaining clarity, courage, and hope in the face of attrition. By singing in shelters, reading by candlelight, walking in forests, or laughing at satire, Ukrainians affirm their humanity. These moments of calm do not deny the war; they remind all who share them why the war is being fought. Relaxation, paradoxically, becomes another form of resistance—a quiet statement that a nation under siege can still find joy, and in that joy, strength.
